What is on this worksheet

This worksheet practices both sides of number patterns: filling in the missing terms in a sequence and finding the rule that makes a pattern work. Eight sequences ask children to fill in blanks at the end and in the middle of each row, while the final four rows show the entire sequence and ask for the step. Working both forward from a rule and backward from the numbers builds the algebraic thinking children need for higher grade math.

How to use it

Print the sheet and fill in the missing numbers in each pattern row, then write the rule for the rows below. Press Show answers on screen if you want to check your answers before printing.

Three ways to practice

Find the gap first

Look at two neighboring numbers that are already filled in and subtract them. Once you know the gap, test it on the next pair to confirm the rule before writing in any blanks.

Say the pattern out loud

Reading the numbers aloud helps children hear whether a pattern climbs by adding or multiplying. Hearing a jump grow larger often catches a growing or multiplication rule quickly.

Make up your own rule

After completing the worksheet, pick a starting number and a rule, then write the first four numbers for a partner or parent to solve. Creating a pattern is the best proof of understanding.

A tip worth knowing

Check the difference between the first two numbers. If that same difference repeats across the row, you have found the rule.

Frequently asked questions

What grade is this number patterns worksheet for?

This worksheet is designed for Grades 2 to 4. It covers addition and subtraction patterns with steps up to 10 and 25, as well as introductory multiplication patterns.

How do children find the rule in a number sequence?

Find two numbers side by side and subtract the smaller from the larger. If the next pair has the same difference, the rule is to add or subtract that number. If the numbers grow very quickly, check for multiplication.

Can I print an answer key?

Yes. Tap the Show answers button before printing to reveal every missing number and rule, giving you a complete answer key for grading.
