This is the last of the five Dolch lists, and finishing it is a genuine milestone. Together the Dolch words make up somewhere around half to two thirds of the words in a typical children's book, so a child who reads all five lists on sight can give nearly all of their attention to meaning instead of decoding. The Grade 3 set completes the number words with six, seven, eight and ten, and brings in words for describing how things happen, such as better, never, only and together.

Three ways to practice
Line up the number words
Pull six, seven, eight and ten and put them in order, then add one, two and three from the pre-primer pack and four from the primer pack. Seeing the number words assembled across all the lists makes the collection feel finished, and children like laying them out in sequence.
Find the opposites
This list pairs up naturally: hot against cold from the Grade 2 pack, long against small, full against a cup that is not. Sorting cards into opposite pairs gives a reason to read each word closely and quietly builds vocabulary at the same time.
Run a two second check
Show each card for about two seconds and move on. At this stage the goal is not whether your child can work the word out but whether they know it without trying. Any card that needs thinking time goes back in the practice pile, and the rest can retire.

What comes after a child finishes all the Dolch lists?
The next step is usually subject words rather than another sight list, so the vocabulary that shows up in science, history and math problems. At this point most reading practice is better spent on real books than on cards, because the remaining growth comes from meeting words in context.
How do I know these words are truly automatic?
Watch for hesitation rather than errors. A child who reads a word correctly but pauses first is still working it out, and that pause is what steals attention from the meaning of the sentence. Instant, effortless recognition is the goal, which is what the two second check is designed to reveal.
Does the order of the five Dolch lists matter?
The lists are ordered by how often the words appear and roughly by difficulty, so working through them in order is sensible. It is not a strict sequence though, and there is no harm in pulling a Grade 3 word forward if your child keeps meeting it in a favorite book.
