This is the full multiplication grid from 1 to 12 on a single page, with every answer in place. Reading a grid is its own small skill: find the row, find the column, and slide a finger until they meet. It is worth showing a child that once rather than assuming it is obvious. Three ways to practice
Highlight the diagonal
Run a highlighter from the top left corner down to the bottom right and you land on 1, 4, 9, 16, 25 and onward to 144. These are the square numbers, the answers where a number is multiplied by itself. They are worth knowing on sight, and the diagonal makes them easy to find again.
Fold the chart to show the mirror
The grid is symmetrical along that same diagonal, because 3 times 7 and 7 times 3 give the same answer. Folding the page along the diagonal so the two halves meet makes the point better than any explanation, and it means a child only has to learn a little over half the grid.
Take one row a week
Rather than staring at all 144 answers, circle a single row and live with it for a week. The 2s, 5s and 10s come quickly because of their patterns, the 3s and 4s take a little longer, and the 6s through 9s are usually the real work. Progress feels visible when it is one row at a time.

Use a highlighter to mark square numbers along the diagonal (1, 4, 9, 16, 25... 144) to spot multiplication patterns.

Frequently asked questions
Which times tables should a child learn first?
Start with 2, 5 and 10, because each has an obvious pattern a child can spot without memorizing much. Move next to 3 and 4, then take on 6, 7, 8 and 9 last. By the time you reach those, the mirror rule has already covered many of the answers through the earlier rows.
Is it better to memorize the facts or understand them?
Both, in that order of importance. Understanding that 4 times 6 means four groups of six is what makes multiplication usable in real problems, and it should come first. Recall matters too, because a child who has to work out every fact runs out of attention before finishing a longer problem.
Why does the chart go to 12 rather than 10?
Twelve has stayed the standard largely because of how often it shows up in everyday measures such as months, inches and dozens. The stretch from 10 to 12 is small once the rest is known, and school worksheets in the US and Canada generally assume the tables run that far.
