What phonics is
Phonics is the method of teaching reading by matching letters to the sounds they make. Instead of memorizing whole words as pictures, a child learns that letters stand for sounds, and that blending those sounds together builds a word. It is the approach with the strongest research behind it for early reading, because it gives a child a tool to work out words they have never seen before, rather than only the words someone has taught them.
The order that works: sounds, then words, then teams
These flashcards follow the natural phonics progression, and the deck buttons above step through it. First come the letter sounds, because every word is built from them, and it is the sound a letter makes that matters for reading, not its name. Next come CVC words, the short consonant-vowel-consonant words like cat, hop and bug, grouped into families that share an ending so a child can read a whole set after learning one. Last come digraphs, the two-letter teams like ch, sh, th and wh that make a single new sound, which is the first step beyond simple sounding out.
How to practice phonics
Keep it playful and short. Have the child say each sound out loud, then blend the sounds into the word, running them together faster each time. For CVC words, point out the family: once cat is easy, hat, bat and mat are almost free. For digraphs, teach the child to hunt for the team before sounding out, so they do not try to read ch as two separate sounds. A few minutes a day, out loud, does far more than a long silent session.
