Sliding numbers into bigger numbers

Every slide sends the whole grid of numbered tiles as far as it can go in one direction, and when two tiles carrying the same number collide they fuse into one worth double: a pair of 2s becomes a 4, two 4s become an 8, and the chain climbs from there. A fresh tile appears after each move, slowly crowding the space you have to work in, and the classic goal is to keep fusing until a single tile finally reads 2048.

The corner that wins games

Almost every strong game is built around a single idea: pick a corner, anchor your largest tile there, and never let it budge. Sliding mostly in two or three directions keeps that big tile pinned while smaller numbers gather beside it, ready to merge upward. The move to avoid is the careless slide that scatters your high tiles across the board, because once they are separated they are hard to bring back together. There is no clock, so the reward goes to the patient.

Doubling, place value and patience

Behind the calm sliding, 2048 is quietly a math workout. A child who plays it grows easy with doubling and with the powers of two, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and starts to feel how fast numbers climb when they keep doubling. Just as usefully, the game rewards planning a move ahead and resisting the tempting slide, a kind of self-control that a race against a timer would never build.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play 2048?

Swipe or use the arrow keys to slide all the tiles one way. When two tiles with the same number touch, they join into one bigger number. Keep joining tiles to reach 2048.

What happens when the 2048 board is full?

The game ends when the grid is full and no neighboring tiles match, so there is no move left to make. Until then you can keep sliding, so the trick is to avoid filling the board with scattered numbers you cannot join. Keeping your biggest tile in one corner leaves the most room to work.

Can you keep playing after you reach 2048?

Yes. Reaching the 2048 tile is the classic goal, but the game does not stop you there. You can keep merging to chase 4096, 8192 and beyond for as long as you still have a move. Many players treat 2048 as the finish line, then start a fresh board to beat their score.
