What is on this worksheet
This is the sheet after counting to fifty cents, and the difference is more than a larger number. Rows here can hold several quarters, so a child counting on has to pass seventy five and land on amounts that no longer fit the pattern of small change. Totals are written in dollars and cents throughout, which is where children start to see that the numbers after the point are just the cents they have been counting all along.
How to use it
Print the sheet and write each total in dollars and cents. Totals here run higher than fifty cents, so several rows cross into amounts that need carrying when counted on.
Three ways to practice
Group the quarters first
Two quarters make fifty, three make seventy five. Counting the quarters as a group and then adding the smaller coins is quicker and less error prone than counting every coin in turn.
Work out the change
For each row, ask how much more would make a whole dollar. That is subtraction with a purpose, and it is the calculation a child will actually use at a shop counter.
Set a price and pay it
Name a price under a dollar and ask your child to pick coins from a row that would cover it. Choosing coins to reach an amount is harder than counting a set and it is the more useful skill.
A tip worth knowing
When a running total passes a whole dollar or lands on a round number, say it out loud before moving on. Anchoring at seventy five or at a dollar stops a long count going astray near the end.

Frequently asked questions
How is this different from the fifty cents sheet?
The totals go higher and more rows contain several quarters, so counting on passes the halfway points where children most often lose track. The method is the same, the arithmetic is longer.
Should my child write a dollar sign?
Yes. The answer key writes every total as dollars and cents, and getting used to that form is part of the exercise. It also removes any doubt about whether an answer means cents or dollars.
What if my child counts the coins out of order?
They will usually still reach the right total, but it takes longer and goes wrong more often. Largest coin first is worth insisting on now, while the totals are small enough to recover from a mistake.
