How to use the Team Generator

Type every name in the box, with one name on each line. Pick how many teams you need using the plus and minus buttons, then press Make teams. The tool shuffles the names and shares them out as evenly as possible, so the teams are fair and random every time. Press it again for a brand new mix.

Fair teams without the playground pick

The point of shuffling names by machine is that it takes the sting out of choosing sides. No captains, no being picked last, no arguing over who got the strongest players, just a fresh random split each time you press the button. It suits a class breaking into project groups or reading circles, and it works just as well at home for quiz teams, relay races or a board game.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Team Generator work?

Type all the names in the box, one on each line. Choose how many teams you want, then press Make teams. The names are mixed up and shared out evenly into fair, random teams.

Is it useful for teachers?

Yes. It is a fast, fair way to split a class into groups for projects, games or activities, with no arguments about who picks who.

What happens if the players do not divide evenly?

The extra players are spread out one per team, so the teams stay as even as possible, some simply end up with one more member than others. Eleven names across three teams, for example, gives sizes of four, four and three. Pressing the button again reshuffles everyone into a brand new set of teams.
