About Lights Out
The board is a grid of lights, some on and some off. When you tap a light, it switches between on and off, and so do the lights directly above, below, to the left and to the right of it. The corners and edges flip fewer neighbors. Your goal is to turn every single light off. Because each tap changes several lights at once, you need to think about the order of your taps. Take your time and watch how each move affects the board.
Tips for kids
A helpful method is to work from the top row down. Tap lights in the second row to switch off any lights still on in the top row, then move down row by row. With practice you will spot patterns that help. Start with the 3 by 3 grid to learn how the flips work, then try bigger grids.
Why it is good for kids
Lights Out is wonderful for logical thinking and planning ahead. Children learn that actions have knock on effects and that the order of steps matters, which is a great problem solving skill.
