About the Ludo Game

Ludo is a race game that families have played for generations, and it is one of the easiest board games for a child to pick up. Every player has four tokens sitting in their colored yard. The whole aim is to get all four of your tokens the long way around the board and safely up into your home column in the middle. The dice decide how far you move, so there is luck, but there are real choices too about which token to move each turn.

To get a token out of your yard and onto the track you have to roll a six. Once tokens are out, you move one of them by the number on the dice each turn. If you land right on top of a single opponent token, you knock it all the way back to its yard, which is the best feeling in the game. The colored star squares are safe houses where no one can be knocked back. Rolling a six gives you another turn, and so does capturing a token or getting one home, so a good turn can keep going. The first player to bring all four tokens home is the winner.

Simple tips to win at Ludo

Try to get more than one token out early so you always have a choice of moves, because being stuck with a single token is where games are lost. Keep an eye on the safe star squares and use them to rest a token when rivals are close behind. Chasing a capture feels great, but do not leave your own token sitting one roll in front of an opponent right after. And near the end, remember you need the exact number to move a token into its final home square, so plan the last few rolls rather than racing blindly.

Why Ludo is good for kids

Ludo quietly teaches counting, turn taking and a bit of planning under a little bit of luck. A young child practices counting squares on every move, while older players start weighing up which token to advance and when to play it safe. Because the dice keep it fair, a five year old can genuinely beat a grownup, which makes it a warm game for the whole family to share around one screen.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Ludo?

Each player has four tokens that start in their home yard. Roll the dice and race your tokens all the way around the board and up into your home column. You need a six to bring a token out of the yard. If you land exactly on a square where a single opponent token is sitting, you send it all the way back to its yard. The colored star squares are safe, so nobody can be sent home from those. First player to get all four tokens home wins.

Can I play against the computer or a friend?

Both. Pick vs Computer to play as Red against three computer players, or pick 2 Players to share the screen with a friend, Red against Yellow. Roll a six and you get another turn, and you also roll again whenever you capture a token or send one home.
