What is the Vocabulary game?

Vocabulary is the store of words a child understands, and the bigger it is the more they get out of everything they read. The fastest way to grow it is through synonyms and antonyms, words that mean the same and words that mean the opposite, because each new word is learned next to one a child already knows. This game shows a word and asks for its synonym on some turns and its antonym on others. The answer checks itself the moment you tap, and the working gives both, so one word teaches two.

How do you play the Vocabulary game?

A word appears with a question. When it asks for the word that means the SAME, pick the synonym. When it asks for the OPPOSITE, pick the antonym. One of the wrong choices is always the opposite of what was asked, so reading the question matters as much as knowing the word. Easy uses everyday words, Medium steps up, and Hard brings in the richer words a middle schooler meets in real books.

Vocabulary from grade 3 to grade 8

Synonyms and antonyms are taught from the early grades right through middle school, getting harder as the words do. Because the difficulty is a button, one page carries a child from everyday words to the vocabulary of real reading. For spelling those words correctly once they are known, our word games have more to play.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Vocabulary game practice?

Synonyms and antonyms, the two fastest ways to grow a word store. A word appears and you pick the choice that means the same, or on other turns the one that means the opposite. The answer checks itself, and the working shows both the synonym and the antonym so each word teaches two.

What is the difference between a synonym and an antonym?

A synonym is a word that means almost the same, like glad for happy. An antonym is a word that means the opposite, like sad for happy. The game asks for one or the other each turn, and tempts you with the opposite as a wrong choice, so you learn to read the question carefully.

What grade is this vocabulary for?

Synonyms and antonyms run right through school. Easy uses everyday words for second and third grade, Medium steps up to fourth and fifth, and Hard brings in the richer words of middle school. Start where your child is comfortable and move up a level when it feels easy.
