How to read the moves

Every cube guide, book and video uses these six letters. Learn them here and you can follow any of them. Each letter is one face of the cube, and turning it clockwise means clockwise as you look straight at that face.

R RightThe face on your right. Turn it like a steering wheel, clockwise.
L LeftThe face on your left, turned clockwise as you look straight at it.
U UpThe face on top. Clockwise means looking down on it from above.
D DownThe face underneath, turned clockwise as if you were looking up at it.
F FrontThe face pointing at you. This is the easiest one to picture.
B BackThe face round the other side, hidden from you.

The little marks after a letter

' PrimeSay it as prime. It means turn that face the other way. R prime is the right face turned backwards.
2 DoubleTurn that face twice, all the way round to the other side. R2 is R done twice, and it does not matter which way you go.
w WideTurn two layers together instead of one. You only meet this on the 4x4, because it has layers a plain turn cannot reach.

Start on the small cube, not the big one

Almost everyone who gives up on a cube gave up on a 3x3. It has forty-three quintillion positions and no amount of turning it randomly will ever finish it, so a child twists it for twenty minutes, makes no visible progress and puts it in a drawer. The 2x2 is the same puzzle with the hard part taken out. It has eight corner pieces and no edges or centers to worry about, and however badly it is mixed it is never more than eleven moves from being finished. That number matters more than it sounds: it means a child is always close, and can be shown exactly how close.

The turns are identical on both cubes, and so is the thinking. Learn on the 2x2 and none of it is wasted when you pick up the bigger one.

Reading the letters

Every cube guide, video and printed sheet uses the same shorthand, and it takes about a minute to learn. R means the right face, L the left, U the face on top, D the one underneath, F the face towards you and B the one at the back. A letter on its own means turn that face clockwise while looking straight at it. An apostrophe after the letter means turn it the other way, so R prime is the right face counterclockwise. A 2 after the letter means turn it twice, which lands in the same place whichever way you go.

How the solve actually works

The method that works is to finish the cube in layers rather than chasing single colors around it. Build one complete face first, and check that the band of color immediately below it lines up too, because a face that looks right on top but has a mismatched skirt underneath is not really finished. That gives you a solid bottom layer to work from. Everything after that happens in the top layer, and the trick is that you can move pieces up there without disturbing what you have already built, so long as you put back whatever you take out.

That is the whole idea behind every cube algorithm: a short sequence of turns that lifts a piece out of the way, moves something, and puts the first piece back exactly where it was. What a cube is actually teaching

Spatial reasoning is the obvious one, and it is real: to plan a move you have to picture faces you cannot currently see. But the more useful lesson is about sequences. A cube punishes fiddling and rewards following a procedure exactly, in order, without improvising halfway through. That is a genuinely hard skill for a child and it transfers to long division, to following a recipe, and to debugging anything at all.

There is also a lesson in the fact that you often have to make things look worse before they get better. Slotting the last piece in usually means breaking up a face you just finished. Children who have only ever been rewarded for keeping things tidy find that surprisingly hard, and getting past it is worth more than the solve.

How do you solve a 2x2 cube?

Work in two stages rather than trying to fix everything at once. First build one whole face and make sure the side colors under it line up, which gives you a finished bottom layer. Then turn only the top layer and the right and front faces to bring the last four pieces home. A 2x2 is never more than eleven moves from solved, so you are always closer than it looks.

What do R, U and F mean on a cube?

They are the names of the faces you turn. R is the right face, U is the face on top, F is the one facing you. A plain letter means turn that face clockwise as you look straight at it. A letter with an apostrophe, like R prime, means turn it the other way. A letter with a 2 means turn it twice. Every cube guide in the world uses these letters, so learning them here means you can follow any of them.

What age can a child start on a cube?

Around seven or eight for the 2x2 with help, and nine or ten to work at it alone. The 3x3 is genuinely hard and most children need an adult alongside them or a written method to follow. Starting on the 2x2 matters: it uses the same turns and the same thinking as the big cube but finishes in a fraction of the moves, so a child actually gets to feel what solving one is like instead of giving up halfway.

Is this the same as the cube I have at home?

Yes, the puzzle works exactly the same way. The 2x2 here is the pocket cube with eight corner pieces, and the 3x3 is the standard one. Colors are laid out the usual way, with white opposite yellow, green opposite blue and red opposite orange, so anything you learn here transfers straight to the cube on your shelf.

Why does the cube never break when I turn it?

Because every position you can reach here was made by turning a solved cube, the same as twisting a real one. A cube you scramble by pulling the stickers off and putting them back at random is usually impossible to solve, and a lot of online cube pages let that happen. Here you can always get back, and the solver proves it.
