Spelling Games for Kids

Free Ages 6-11 No sign-up Hand-picked

Nobody ever fell in love with a spelling drill sheet, but plenty of kids will happily unscramble letters, guess hidden words and race falling ones for half an hour. Same letters, same patterns, entirely different mood, and the mood is what keeps the practice happening.

The games below each press a different spelling muscle: recalling a word letter by letter, spotting a wrong spelling among right ones, and building words from a scramble. A couple of rounds of two different games makes a complete session.

Frequently asked questions

Do spelling games actually improve spelling?

Yes, because spelling improves with retrieval practice, pulling a word out of memory letter by letter, and that is precisely what guessing and unscrambling games force, dozens of times per round.

What is a good spelling routine for a school week?

Two or three short game sessions on different games, plus one round of the spelling quiz at the end of the week as the check. Ten minutes each is enough.

My child spells well in games but not in writing. Why?

Games test recognition and recall; writing adds speed and divided attention. Keep the games for word knowledge and add a little real writing, notes, lists, silly stories, to transfer it.
