Nobody ever fell in love with a spelling drill sheet, but plenty of kids will happily unscramble letters, guess hidden words and race falling ones for half an hour. Same letters, same patterns, entirely different mood, and the mood is what keeps the practice happening.

Games test recognition and recall; writing adds speed and divided attention. Keep the games for word knowledge and add a little real writing, notes, lists, silly stories, to transfer it.
