How to play Chinese Checkers

In Chinese Checkers, players race to move ten marbles across a six-pointed star board into the opposite triangle by stepping one space into an empty hole or hopping over adjacent marbles. Choose vs Computer on Easy, Medium or Hard to play solo, or select 2 Players to share one screen with a friend, then press Start. Every marble starts in its home triangle, with your purple marbles in the bottom point and your opponent's coral marbles in the top point.

On your turn, drag or tap any of your purple marbles. Every legal destination lights up with a glowing gold ring. Drop or tap on a glowing hole to make your move. You can either slide one hole into an empty neighbor or hop over an adjacent marble into an open hole beyond. When your marble arrives at its destination, turn order passes to your opponent.

How do marbles move and jump in Chinese Checkers

A marble moves either by stepping one space into an adjacent empty hole along any grid line, or by jumping over an adjacent marble into an empty hole directly beyond it. Stepping always ends your turn, while jumping allows you to string multiple chain hops together in a single move. When another marble sits right next to yours along any grid line and the hole directly behind it is empty, your marble leaps over it and lands on the empty hole.

Jumps can be chained together in a single turn. If your marble lands from a jump and immediately sees another valid hurdle, it can jump again, and again, pivoting in any direction along the grid lines. You can jump over your own marbles or your opponent's marbles, but you never capture or remove them. Setting up stepping stones that let your marbles leap halfway across the board in one go is the heart of the game.

How do you win Chinese Checkers

The first player to move all ten of their marbles completely into the opposite goal triangle wins the game. In our two-player game, you win when your ten purple marbles fill all ten holes of the top point. The scoreboard above the board tracks exactly how many marbles each player has placed in their destination point, so you always know who is leading.

To keep games fair, a marble that reaches the opposite home triangle should stay inside that goal area, though it can reposition inside the goal to make room for teammates arriving behind it. A lost round simply means starting a fresh game with a new strategy.

What strategy helps you win Chinese Checkers

The most effective strategy in Chinese Checkers is to advance your back marbles early, keep your pieces grouped closely as stepping stone ladders, and control the center of the board. Leaving stragglers behind in your starting nest is the most common beginner mistake, because they will have no stepping stones left to jump over once the middle of the board clears. Try to move your pieces as a cohesive group so they can hop over each other like a ladder.

Keep the center open for yourself while denying easy super-jumps to your opponent. If you see your opponent lining up a four-hop jump, a single step into their path can block their runway. How does Chinese Checkers help kids learn

Chinese Checkers develops spatial reasoning, working memory and multi-step foresight by challenging kids to visualize complex jumping paths across a geometric star grid. Because no marbles are captured or removed from the board, children learn to evaluate trades, plan moves collaboratively across shared stepping stones, and practice patience in a positive, low-stress environment.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Chinese Checkers?

You start with ten marbles in one point of the six-pointed star. Your goal is to move all ten marbles across the board into the opposite triangle. On each turn, you move one marble either by stepping into an adjacent empty hole or by hopping over adjacent marbles. The first player to fill the opposite point with all ten of their marbles wins.

How do jumps work in Chinese Checkers?

A marble can jump over any adjacent marble, yours or your opponent's, into the empty hole directly beyond it along the same straight line. Unlike traditional Checkers, no pieces are captured or removed from the board. All marbles stay in play, and you can string multiple jumps together in a single turn.

Can you jump multiple times in one turn?

Yes. If your marble lands from a jump and has another valid jump available from that new hole, you can jump again and keep jumping as long as there are valid hurdles. You can stop hopping at any point during your turn. Long chain jumps that travel halfway across the board are the most exciting part of the game.

Can I play Chinese Checkers against the computer?

Yes. You can play against the computer on Easy, Medium or Hard. Easy makes casual opening moves and suits young kids. Medium looks for smart chain jumps. Hard plans deep forward paths and rarely leaves stragglers behind. You can also pick 2 Players to share one screen with a friend or family member.

What does Chinese Checkers teach kids?

Chinese Checkers builds spatial awareness, forward planning and pattern recognition. To find long chain jumps, a player must look several steps ahead and see how pieces form stepping stones across the board. It also teaches patience and turn-taking without any piece removal, keeping the game positive from start to finish.
